Geologists and Geoscientists are stewards or caretakers of Earth's resources and the environment. They work to understand natural processes on Earth and other planets. They use a wide variety of techniques from across the scientific disciplines (biology, physics, chemistry and others) to study the causes of catastrophic events such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, glaciations, and extinctions.
Geodetic and Geomatics Engineering blends the knowledge of science and engineering with information technologies to solve complex, real-world problems. Geomatics and Geodetic Engineers focus on the science and technologies related to positioning and navigation, sensors, measurements, and mapping, as well as on spatial awareness and intelligence.
Currently, almost all the states in Germany do not charge tuition fees even to non-EU students. International students can therefore take advantage of this opportunity to earn a free master's degree in Geology and Geomatic Engineering, in English, from one of its tuition-free universities. International students get to study for free and also have the opportunity to travel around Europe during the semester breaks.

The HafenCity University (HCU) in Hamburg offers one of the few specialisations in Hydrography in the world and the only one in Germany accredited according to the highest FIG/IHO/ICA level (Category A). Hydrography is one of the three specialisations (together with Geodetic Measurement Technology and Geoinformation Technology) within the MSc Programme Geomatics that can be chosen at the HCU.

The Master's programme Geodetic Engineering is dedicated to students with a BSc in geodesy and geoinformation or related topics such as computer science, mathematics, physics, or electrical engineering.
