7 Free Master’s in Geology and Geomatics Engineering in Germany

Geologists and Geoscientists are stewards or caretakers of Earth's resources and the environment. They work to understand natural processes on Earth and other planets. They use a wide variety of techniques from across the scientific disciplines (biology, physics, chemistry and others) to study the causes of catastrophic events such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, glaciations, and extinctions.
Geodetic and Geomatics Engineering blends the knowledge of science and engineering with information technologies to solve complex, real-world problems. Geomatics and Geodetic Engineers focus on the science and technologies related to positioning and navigation, sensors, measurements, and mapping, as well as on spatial awareness and intelligence.
Currently, almost all the states in Germany do not charge tuition fees even to non-EU students. International students can therefore take advantage of this opportunity to earn a free master's degree in Geology and Geomatic Engineering, in English, from one of its tuition-free universities. International students get to study for free and also have the opportunity to travel around Europe during the semester breaks.

7) University of Bayreuth---Master of Science (MSc) in Experimental Geosciences

The MSc programme Experimental Geosciences pursues training and research in one of the central areas in Earth Sciences: the characterisation of physical and chemical properties of Earth materials to advance the understanding of processes in and properties of the solid earth.

6) University of Göttingen---Master of Science in Hydrogeology and Environmental Geoscience

While the world population has tripled during the past 50 years, water demand has increased six-fold. Today, more than one billion people worldwide still lack access to clean drinking water. Due to increasing water scarcity, climate change effects and uncontrolled water pollution from non-sustainable development, serious water crises are to be expected in the near future. The sustainable management and protection of groundwater resources with innovative strategies is increasingly gaining importance.

5) University of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg---Master of Engineering Geodesy and Geographic Information

Our postgraduate degree course "Geodesy and Geoinformatics" is a three-semester study programme at the second cycle level (Master's degree). The first two semesters are reserved for lectures and practical parts of the programme, while the last semester is dedicated to the development of the Master's thesis.

4) Ludwig Maximilians University Munich---Master's Degree Programme in Geology

We work at the interface of internally (plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions) and externally (glaciers, climate) controlled processes. Our research also addresses relevant issues in natural resources, geohazards, and climate change. Students can focus their studies on a wide range of topics, from tectonics and geodynamics to rheology and materials science, to earth surface processes and environmental studies, to geohazards or resource geology.

3) HafenCity University Hamburg--Master of Science in Geomatics, Specialisation Hydrography

The HafenCity University (HCU) in Hamburg offers one of the few specialisations in Hydrography in the world and the only one in Germany accredited according to the highest FIG/IHO/ICA level (Category A). Hydrography is one of the three specialisations (together with Geodetic Measurement Technology and Geoinformation Technology) within the MSc Programme Geomatics that can be chosen at the HCU.

2) University of Bonn---Geodetic Engineering (Master of Science)

The Master's programme Geodetic Engineering is dedicated to students with a BSc in geodesy and geoinformation or related topics such as computer science, mathematics, physics, or electrical engineering. It is a full-time programme taught entirely in English with a research-based profile. The standard period of study is four semesters, including the Master's thesis.

1) Leibniz Universität Hannover---Master of Science in Geodesy and Geoinformatics

Geodesy and geoinformatics is an engineering and geoscience subject with a mathematics and physics bias and a close affinity to environmental science, law, and social sciences. Typical questions include engineering and geodetic monitoring of structures, capturing and use of environmental information, guidance of machines and vehicles, and remote sensing and researching of the system Earth.
