9 Free Master’s in Marine Science in Europe

Our oceans cover 70 percent of the surface of the earth and are some of the most poorly understood ecosystems on the planet. This massive natural resource is also under constant pressures of our modern, coastal society. With complex issues such as global climate change, food production, tourism, oil, gas and mineral extraction, and waste management, the need for highly trained and specialised marine science professionals continues to grow.

Tuition-free European countries like Germany and Norway offer international students the opportunity to earn a master's degree in Marine Science, in English, irrespective of their country of origin, for free. International students can study for free and also get the opportunity to travel around Europe, learn a new language, and make some lifelong friends. It's amazing that this free education is extended even to non-EU students.

9) University of Bergen---Master's in Aquaculture Biology/Master's in Marine Biology

Our two-year master's programme in biology offers teaching from world-class scientists within their fields. UiB is Norway's largest marine university, with research and education of a high international standard and several world-leading research environments. Bergen's location offers unique opportunities to use nature as a classroom and we emphasise a hands-on approach by extensive use of data analysis, field work and interactive discussions with our staff and students from around the world.

The specialization Marine Biology aims to educate marine biologists with a general overview and knowledge about: key processes and typical patterns in the marine ecosystem, flora and fauna characteristics to marine habitats, marine organisms - their biology and ecology, and the most common research methods within field-based, experimental and theoretical oriented research of marine ecosystems.

8) Norwegian University of Life Sciences---Master of Science in Aquaculture

The candidates for the Master?s degree in Aquaculture are future professionals in the management of fish farming support industries, administration, and those interested in further higher-level education and research. The Master's programme will emphasize most of the biological and technological aspects of aquaculture, and will include transfer of results from ongoing research.

6) Nord University---MSc in Biology and Aquaculture

Marine resources are of great value to humankind and must be maintained for future generations. Master's students will gain knowledge on the marine environment and its living resources, helping them understand the importance of sustainability both in aquaculture production and in the face of climate change. Practical experience obtained through fieldwork, experiments and laboratory analyses, will qualify students for career paths in the field of aquaculture, genomics and marine sciences.

3) University of Bremen---Master of Science in Marine Geosciences

The programme focuses on geoscientific aspects of climate, resources and technologies in the marine environment. These issues are under investigation at the leading German marine research institutions in Bremen and Bremerhaven. The multidisciplinary nature of these research fields as well as the application of up-to-date scientific methods, instruments and computing strongly influence teaching methods and topics.

2) Kiel University---Master of Science in Marine Geosciences

The internationally oriented graduate study programme Master of Science "Marine Geosciences" promotes the latest state of marine geosciences and technology, in particular in the areas of marine coastal geology, past climates, biogeochemistry and paleoecology. The degree programme provides students with knowledge of fundamental terms of geological, biological, geochemical and physical processes in the ocean. Both basic and applied research are objectives of the programme.
