4 Free Master’s in Meteorology/Climate in Europe

Meteorology studies the earth's atmosphere. In order to improve their understanding of the processes in the atmosphere and enable them to make predictions, meteorologists develop physical-mathematical models. They also observe and measure all processes taking place in the atmosphere and evaluate the data using mathematical methods. Sub-areas of the subject include experimental and theoretical meteorology, as well as synoptics (large-scale recording of current weather processes). Medium states and their long-term changes in the atmosphere are investigated by climate research.

Tuition-free European countries like Germany and Norway offer international students the opportunity to earn a master's degree in Meteorology/Climate, in English, irrespective of their country of origin, for free. The MSc in Integrated Climate System Sciences (ICSS) combines all sciences concerned with the climate system. These include natural sciences and climate-relevant aspects of social and economic sciences. This interdisciplinary approach will enable you to understand the processes of climate variability and climate change and the respective consequences for societies, including how they respond to these.

2) Kiel University---Master of Science: Climate Physics

The study of climate physics (meteorology and physical oceanography) will provide students with advanced knowledge on atmosphere, ocean and the climate system using the terms and laws of physics. Students will become familiar with experimental and theoretical methods, and will be guided towards current research.

1) Leibniz Universität Hannover---Master of Science in Meteorology

This Master's course is meant to enable students to conduct their own scientific work. Prominent topics in research and teaching are the following: spectral measurement of solar radiation and its effect on human health, remote sensing of clouds, aerosols and trace gases both from the ground and from satellites, effect of weather on solar energy efficiency, local climate, dispersion of pollution, urban canopy layer, large eddy simulation of turbulent atmospheric flows to study the effects of turbulent flows in urban areas, the effects on wind power plants, and turbulent exchange processes between surface and atmosphere.
